Geometry and seismic properties of the subducting Cocos plate in central Mexico
The geometry and properties of the interface of the Cocos plate beneath central Mexico are determined from the receiver functions (RFs) utilizing data from the Meso America Subduction Experiment (MASE). The RF image shows that the subducting oceanic crust is shallowly dipping to the north at 15° for 80 km from Acapulco and then horizontally underplates the continental crust for approximately 200 km to the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt (TMVB). The crustal image also shows that there is no continental root associated with the TMVB. The migrated image of the RFs shows that the slab is steeply dipping into the mantle at about 75° beneath the TMVB. Both the continental and oceanic Moho are clearly seen in both images, and modeling of the RF conversion amplitudes and timings of the underplated features reveals a thin low-velocity zone between the plate and the continental crust that appears to absorb nearly all of the strain between the upper plate and the slab. By inverting RF amplitudes of the converted phases and their time separations, we produce detailed maps of the seismic properties of the upper and lower oceanic crust of the subducting Cocos plate and its thickness. High Poisson's and Vp/Vs ratios due to anomalously low S wave velocity at the upper oceanic crust in the flat slab region may indicate the presence of water and hydrous minerals or high pore pressure. The evidence of high water content within the oceanic crust explains the flat subduction geometry without strong coupling of two plates. This may also explain the nonvolcanic tremor activity and slow slip events occurring in the subducting plate and the overlying crust

Carbon isotopes in bulk carbonaceous chondrites
The chemical and physical processes involved in the formation of the solar system are examined. Primitive matter has been found on a microscopic scale in a variety of meteorites: fragments of small solar system bodies that were never part of a large planet. This primitive matter has, in most cases, been identified by the presence of anomalous abundances of some isotopes of the chemical elements. Of particular interest for carbon isotope studies are the primitive meteorites known as carbonaceous chondrites. Using a selective oxidation technique to sort out the carbon contained in different chemical forms (graphite, carbonates, and organic matter), four carbonaceous chondrites are analyzed. The presence of the (13) C-rich component was confirmed and additional carbon components with different, but characteristic, isotopic signatures were resolved

Energy management practices in the Ministry of Defence: the British Army
i. Problem: Inconsistencies in levels of energy management in some areas of the British Army (Army) have been identified, which if left unchecked, may lead to ineffective energy management practices and inefficiencies which are common in many organisations. This will have financial and environmental implications for the organisation and requires further action to properly address their use of finite energy resources and the release of carbon dioxide emissions (CO2). ii. Objective: The objective has been to identify and improve the effectiveness of energy management practices in the Army, by building upon existing energy management structure, policy and procedures and examine the value of auditing processes. iii. Methodology: A review of existing energy management practices has been undertaken with the objective of reviewing a previously issued section covering utility management issues in the Armyâs mandatory Logistic Support Inspection (LSI). A new and improved LSI section called âUtilities Managementâ has been produced and has been trialled as part of Army LSIâs in two regional Army Brigades. The outcome of the trial is documented and subsequent recommendations made for the improvement of future energy management practices within the Army. iv. Achievements: A successful trial of the new and improved section on âUtilities Managementâ has been undertaken which actively supports the work programme of Army Divisional and Brigade Energy Advisors in compliance with Army Policy and Regulations, as well as providing guidance and support to Army unit utility programmes. Land Command, who has responsibility for the management and administration of the Armyâs LSI, is reviewing the new and improved section for incorporation into the mandatory inspection Army wide
Design and Fabrication of the NASA Decoupler Pylon for the F-16 Aircraft
The NASA Decoupler Pylon is a passive means of suppressing wing-store flutter. The feasibility of demonstrating this concept on the F-16 aircraft was established through model wind tunnel tests and analyses. As a result of these tests and studies a ship set of Decoupler Pylons was designed and fabricated for a flight test demonstration on the F-16 aircraft. Basic design criteria were developed during the analysis study pertaining to pylon pitch stiffness, alignment system requirements, and damping requirements. A design was developed which utilized an electrical motor for the pylon alignment system. The design uses a four pin, two link pivot design which results in a remote pivot located at the center of gravity of the store when the store is in the aligned position. The pitch spring was fabricated from a tapered constant stress cantilevered beam. The pylon has the same external lines as the existing production pylon and is designed to use a MAU-12 ejection rack which is the same as the one used with the production pylon. The detailed design and fabrication was supported with a complete ground test of the pylon prior to shipment to NASA

The eVALuate study: two parallel randomised trials, one comparing laparoscopic with abdominal hysterectomy, the other comparing laparoscopic with vaginal hysterectomy
OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of laparoscopic hysterectomy
and abdominal hysterectomy in the abdominal trial, and
laparoscopic hysterectomy and vaginal hysterectomy in the
vaginal trial.
DESIGN: Two parallel, multicentre, randomised trials.
Setting 28 UK centres and two South African centres.
Participants 1380 women were recruited; 1346 had surgery;
937 were followed up at one year.
PRIMARY OUTCOME: outcome Rate of major complications.
RESULTS: In the abdominal trial laparoscopic hysterectomy was
associated with a higher rate of major complications than
abdominal hysterectomy (11.1% v 6.2%, P = 0.02; difference
4.9%, 95% confidence interval 0.9% to 9.1%) and the number
needed to treat to harm was 20. Laparoscopic hysterectomy
also took longer to perform (84 minutes v 50 minutes) but was
less painful (visual analogue scale 3.51 v 3.88, P = 0.01) and
resulted in a shorter stay in hospital after the operation (3 days
v 4 days). Six weeks after the operation, laparoscopic
hysterectomy was associated with less pain and better quality of
life than abdominal hysterectomy (SF-12, body image scale, and
sexual activity questionnaires).
In the vaginal trial we found no evidence of a difference in
major complication rates between laparoscopic hysterectomy
and vaginal hysterectomy (9.8% v 9.5%, P = 0.92; difference
0.3%, â 5.2% to 5.8%), and the number needed to treat to harm
was 333.We found no evidence of other differences between
laparoscopic hysterectomy and vaginal hysterectomy except
that laparoscopic hysterectomy took longer to perform (72
minutes v 39 minutes) and was associated with a higher rate of
detecting unexpected pathology (16.4% v 4.8%, P = < 0.01).
However, this trial was underpowered.
CONCLUSIONS: Laparoscopic hysterectomy was associated with a
significantly higher rate of major complications than abdominal
hysterectomy. It also took longer to perform but was associated
with less pain, quicker recovery, and better short term quality of
life. The trial comparing vaginal hysterectomy with laparoscopic
hysterectomy was underpowered and is inconclusive on the rate
of major complications; however, vaginal hysterectomy took less
time
Stress-Induced Cocaine Seeking Requires a Beta-2 Adrenergic Receptor-Regulated Pathway from the Ventral Bed Nucleus of the Stria Terminalis That Regulates CRF Actions in the Ventral Tegmental Area
The ventral bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (vBNST) has been implicated in stress-induced cocaine use. Here we demonstrate that, in the vBNST, corticotropin releasing factor (CRF) is expressed in neurons that innervate the ventral tegmental area (VTA), a site where the CRF receptor antagonist antalarmin prevents the reinstatement of cocaine seeking by a stressor, intermittent footshock, following intravenous self-administration in rats. The vBNST receives dense noradrenergic innervation and expresses β adrenergic receptors (ARs). Footshock-induced reinstatement was prevented by bilateral intra-vBNST injection of the β-2 AR antagonist, ICI-118,551, but not the β-1 AR antagonist, betaxolol. Moreover, bilateral intra-vBNST injection of the β-2 AR agonist, clenbuterol, but not the β-1 agonist, dobutamine, reinstated cocaine seeking, suggesting that activation of vBNST β-2 AR is both necessary for stress-induced reinstatement and sufficient to induce cocaine seeking. The contribution of a β-2 AR-regulated vBNST-to-VTA pathway that releases CRF was investigated using a disconnection approach. Injection of ICI-118,551 into the vBNST in one hemisphere and antalarmin into the VTA of the contralateral hemisphere prevented footshock-induced reinstatement, whereas ipsilateral manipulations failed to attenuate stress-induced cocaine seeking, suggesting that β-2 AR regulate vBNST efferents that release CRF into the VTA, activating CRF receptors, and promoting cocaine use. Last, reinstatement by clenbuterol delivered bilaterally into the vBNST was prevented by bilateral vBNST pretreatment with antalarmin, indicating that β-2 AR-mediated actions in the vBNST also require local CRF receptor activation. Understanding the processes through which stress induces cocaine seeking should guide the development of new treatments for addiction

Apparatus and method for enhancing tissue repair in mammals
An apparatus is introduced for the use of enhancing tissue repair in mammals. The apparatus includes a sleeve; an electrically conductive coil; a sleeve support; an electrical circuit configured to supply the coil with a square wave time varying electrical current sufficient to create approximately 0.05 gauss to 0.5 gauss. When in use, the sleeve of the apparatus is placed on a mammalian body part and the time varying electromagnetic force of from approximately 0.05 gauss to 0.5 gauss is generated on the mammalian body for an extended period of time so that the tissue is encouraged to be regenerated in the mammalian body part at a rate in excess of the normal tissue regeneration rate relative to regeneration without application of the time varying electromagnetic force
